Ranger held over gorilla killings

Conservationists around the world were shocked by the gorilla killings
A senior wildlife park official in Democratic Republic of Congo has been arrested amid claims that he organised the killing of rare mountain gorillas.
The Congolese Nature Conservation Institute (ICCN) is reported to have brought the charges against Honore Mashagiro - one of its members.

Ten gorillas were killed in 2007 in the Virunga National Park, a Unesco world heritage site.

The park is in a volatile region where rebels have set up a base.

The area is also home to more than half of the world's last 700 mountain gorillas living in the wild.

Six other foresters could be questioned over the killings, and their role in trapping and slaughtering the animals on the alleged orders of Mr Mashagiro, reports say.

Holy crap is all I have to say!

By Will Dunham Mon Feb 18, 5:03 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - It was the biggest, baddest, meanest froggy ever to have hopped on Earth.

Scientists on Monday announced the discovery in northwestern Madagascar of a bulky amphibian dubbed the "devil frog" that lived 65 million to 70 million years ago and was so nasty it may have eaten newborn dinosaurs.

This brute was larger than any frog living today and may be the biggest frog ever to have existed, according to paleontologist David Krause of Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York, one of the scientists who found the remains.

Its name, Beelzebufo ampinga, came from Beelzebub, the Greek for devil, and bufo -- Latin for toad. Ampinga means "shield," named for an armor-like part of its anatomy.

Beelzebufo (pronounced bee-el-zeh-BOOF-oh) was 16 inches
long and weighed an estimated 10 pounds (4.5 kg).

Who are they kidding?

US orders massive recall of beef

Workers at the plant are also accused of animal cruelty. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has ordered the recall of 143m lb (64.9m kg) of beef - the largest meat recall in the country's history.

It comes from a company in California, which officials said allowed meat from cattle unable to stand at the time of slaughter to enter the food chain.
But the USDA said the health hazard was minimal. Much of the meat was purchased for federal nutrition programmes.

The meat-packing plant is also being investigated for animal cruelty.
The USDA had suspended operations there earlier this month after an undercover video came to light showing crippled and sick animals being mistreated.

I find this to be an outrage. The fact that the USDA states that "the health hazard was minimal" is what gets me the most. How is the health risk a minimum if they had to recall 143m lbs of beef? This goes beyond health risks though. The thought of animal cruelty isn't a cold spot in me. I may sound like a hyprocrit, being as I am not a vegetarian myself, but when I do eat meat it is a minimum and it is only from local butchers where the animal cruelty is at a low.

Still I want to hear your thoughts on this issue. What do YOU think about it?

What makes a fad a fad? Who controls what the new craze will be?

I had a small debate with a professor of mine this afternoon. We discussed whether or not the wellness and self awareness motion going on is nothing more then a fad or if it is honestly the lack or decline of religion in the United States.

I said it is nothing more then a fad form my stand point. He said it has some elements of a fad but in the long term it can't be because he feels there is a deeper meaning behind it.

I don't know. I continued to debate with him, looking up articles on the internet dealing with fads, and health and wellness. I guess my question to you is:

Do you feel that all this wellness and health "pressure" is nothing more then a fad, or is it deeper then that? Please comment and let me know.

Perhaps this blog was a bad idea. Perhaps it wasn't. Either way I hope to share my passions, worries, thoughts of the day, and probably more information then you wanted to know on here. I'll be linking this to my Radio Broadcasting MySpace (www.myspace.com/b3rrigrrl). Don't ask about the user name at the end of the URL. That is an old account I made on an old e-mail, though it is newer the my original MySpace @ www.myspace.com/karamon101. Either way. I hope both you and I will gain a lot from having this blog. Perhaps I'll end up using this blog more so then my livejournal or insane journal accounts... who know! There is a world of possibilities out there.
